Audition Preparations & Techniques

Fred Thury Studio Theatre, 258 Vanier College (on the second floor near the elevators)

This is a workshop in two parts.

PART I: Learn the about the fundamentals of auditioning from professional industry experts.  Topics will include how to prepare for an audition, what material is best suited for auditioning, and how to approach the actual audition.

 PART II: Observe or participate in a series of Mock Auditions, where participants will have the opportunity to audition in front of professional industry experts, and receive feedback and constructive criticism.  Space is limited to be a participant in the Mock Auditions so sign-up early to avoid disappointment.  Everyone who attends the workshop is welcome to observe the Mock Auditions.

  Professional industry experts will include Justin Bott, Scott Christian, Darcy Evans, and Denise Oucharek.

Justin Bott – Justin recently made his debut at the Winnipeg Studio Theatre with their production of Ordinary Days alongside Angelwalk Theatre.  Previously, with Angelwalk Theatre, Justin had the pleasure of appearing in [title of show] (Dora Mavor Moore nomination), Songs For A New World and from Justin to Kelly (a concert he co-created with the amazing Kelly Holiff).  Justin had the honour of being a participant of the 2012 Banff/Citadel Professional Theatre Program and the Citadel Theatre's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.  Favourite credits include: Freddy in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Moonpath); The Wedding Singer and Joseph…Dreamcoat (Stage West); Romeo & Juliet and Macbeth (Classical Theatre Project); Man In The Mirror (Acting Up Stage); Blue Skies (Victoria Symphony).   www.justinbott.com 

Scott Christian - Most recently, Scott worked as an intern Musical Director at the Shaw Festival, where he worked on Ragtime as the alternate pianist for both keyboard parts and had the opportunity to conduct a sold out performance.  Music Directing credits include Altar Boyz (Angelwalk Theatre - Dora Mavor Moore nomination for Outstanding Production) and Cabaret  (Hart House Theatre).  As a composer, Scott wrote the music for Hero and Leander and most recently had the premiere of his new musical, Through the Gates, in the Summerworks Musical Works series.  An in-demand musical theatre coach, Scott is also part of Theatre20's Composium.  Upcoming: Me and My Town: Thom Allison in Concert (SondheimFest 2013, Winnipeg), I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change (Angelwalk Theatre).

Darcy Evans – Recent Directing Credits include I Love You Because (Angelwalk Theatre – Dora Mavor Moore nomination for Outstanding Production), Hair (RAPA), Lord of the Flies (LOT), Village of Idiots, Lord of the Flies (Metro Studio, Victoria, BC), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Sudbury Theatre Centre and Magnus Theatre) and The Most Happy Fella (Theatre Sheridan).  Darcy directed Lucy Peacock as Cleopatra in his contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra in the Studio Theatre at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival as part of the Michael Langham Workshop for Classical Direction.  He was Associate Director for Little Women on Broadway (starring Sutton Foster) and remounted the Broadway staging for the first U.S. national tour (starring Maureen McGovern).  During 8 Seasons as an actor and associate director with the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, his credits include: To Kill a Mockingbird (associate director), Dangerous Liaisons (assistant director), Hello, Dolly! (associate director), The King and I (assistant director), Fuente Ovejuna, The Winter’s Tale, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Fiddler on the Roof, Man of La Mancha, Patience, The Three Musketeers, The Music Man.  Stratford Festival Casting Credits include Cabaret, Love’s Labours Lost, The Music Man and The King and I.

 Denise Oucharek – Selected credits: Frau Zeller in The Sound of Music (Webber/Mirvish); Anna in Toad - The Anna Russell Story (Theatre Aquarius); Rita/Singer in Flying On Her Own (Neptune Theatre), Woman 2 in Songs for a New World (Angelwalk Theatre); workshops of Canadian musicals: Queen for a Day (Marquis Ent.); The Decameron (Victor Theatre Prod); Pilgrim’s Progress (Lighthouse Festival Theatre) & Evangeline (Mirvish); Annie Golden in Leader Of The Pack, Georgie in The Full Monty (Stage West); Sister Amnesia in Nunsense II (King’s Wharf); Buttercup in H.M.S. Pinafore (Kingston Symphony); Lily in The Secret Garden (YWP); The Narrator in Joseph, The Witch in Into The Woods (Grand Theatre);  ensemble/Rosie U.S in Mamma Mia! (Mirvish).  Denise has been a member of the Voice faculty at Sheridan College and U of T Mississauga, taught vocal improv at Second City, teaches/coaches privately and serves as Artistic Director for the Mississauga Youth Theatre.

Vanier College Productions will be holding auditions for its annual One Act Festival on Saturday, January 19th.  Anyone interested in auditioning is advised to attend this workshop. For more information, click here.

Mock Audition Requirements

Please prepare ONE or BOTH of the following:
  • SONG:  Preferably from the musical theatre canon, or if not, something that would translate well to being performed on stage in a musical theatre setting.  Please prepare the whole song, but be prepared to perform a 16-32 bar selection if time is limited.  Please bring sheet music, hole-punched, and in a binder for the accompanist.
  • MONOLOGUE:  Any style is welcome, but please limit your monologue to a maximum of 2 minutes.  Please think about what genre/style of show you are auditioning for (your choice) when choosing your monologue and be prepared to state this before performing your monologue.
